Overview

When it comes to exterior building materials, few environments test durability like the Yukon. With dramatic daily temperature swings, long winters, intense UV exposure, and heavy moisture, structures in this region demand materials engineered for long-term performance.

One Yukon property owner recently selected UNITREX® Polycarbonate Panels from H&F Manufacturing Corp. for a small cabin/greenhouse-style structure—and the results offer a powerful testament to the product’s resilience.

Project Challenge

The customer needed a panel solution that could withstand:

  • Rapid temperature fluctuations—sometimes up to 30°C (54°F) within a single day
  • Heavy snow loads from long, cold winters
  • High winds and intermittent storms
  • UV exposure during long summer daylight hours
  • Moisture and freeze/thaw cycles that typically cause cracking or warping in lower-quality materials

Traditional materials like fiberglass or PVC often discolor, become brittle, or fail under these conditions. The customer required a panel system engineered specifically for impact resistance, UV stability, and long-term structural integrity.

Solution: UNITREX® Polycarbonate Panels

The customer installed clear corrugated UNITREX® Polycarbonate Panels for the roof and siding. These panels provided:

  • Exceptional impact resistance, reducing risk of denting or cracking
  • High clarity, allowing natural light into the structure
  • UV protection, helping the panels maintain appearance and performance over time
  • Lightweight yet strong construction, making installation manageable even in rugged terrain
  • All-weather durability, suitable for both high heat and freezing temperatures

Performance in the Field

Since installation, the panels have performed exceptionally well—despite the harsh northern climate.

Customer Testimonial:

“Your product survives well in Yukon Canada harsh environments… fluctuating 30°C in a single day.” — Adam

The attached photo (shown above) highlights how the structure maintains its clarity, structural stability, and visual appeal even after exposure to extreme weather cycles.

Why It Works

Polycarbonate is one of the most resilient building materials available, offering:

  • 250x the impact strength of glass
  • UV-resistant coatings that prevent yellowing and surface degradation
  • Thermal stability suited for wide temperature ranges
  • High light transmission, ideal for outdoor structures

UNITREX® panels combine these inherent advantages with H&F’s heavy-duty corrugated profile, which adds strength and rigidity in demanding environments.

Results

  • Long-term durability with no visible cracking, warping, or discoloration
  • Clear, bright interior conditions throughout the year
  • A lightweight, low-maintenance solution that stands up to some of the toughest weather in North America

Conclusion

This Yukon installation showcases the true strength and reliability of H&F’s UNITREX® Polycarbonate Panels. When projects require materials that can thrive in extreme climates—whether cold, hot, or both—polycarbonate remains one of the most dependable choices.

UNITREX polycarbonate panelsAs far as great debates go, “polycarbonate panels vs. fiberglass panels” is exactly on the same level as “Coke vs. Pepsi” or “The Beatles vs. The Stones.”

Yet there are important distinctions between the two, and as makers of polycarbonate panels, we know which will side we’d pick. Read on to see some of the benefits of polycarbonate panels over fiberglass, especially when used as siding and roofing panels.

Appearance

Compared to fiberglass, polycarbonate panels have a much cleaner look, especially after prolonged exposure to the elements. And if you need to cut a hole for wires or antennae, you’ll have a much easier time when working with polycarbonate.

If you need a clear lid when making an enclosure, it’s easier to work with polycarbonate. With fiberglass, you would need to cut a hole in the enclosure and install a polycarbonate window, ultimately making the enclosure weaker. Polycarbonate maintains its clean look and stays sturdy no matter what kind of modifications you need to make to your enclosures.

Modification

On that note, it’s much easier to modify polycarbonate panels than it is fiberglass. Modifying fiberglass enclosures produces a granular dust that can irritate the skin, is a danger to inhale and difficult to clean up. Polycarbonate cuts easily and cleaning, so that modifications produce small shavings that are easy to clean away and pose no health risks.

Resistance to UV light

Fiberglass panels fade when exposed to UV light rays. Overtime, this exposure causes the fibers to deteriorate, and can lead to faded colors in tinted panels. By contrast, polycarbonate has no fibers, allowing it to maintain its color, shape and strength when exposed to UV rays. It’s material you’ll find in headlights and car windshields. This quality is especially helpful when the material is used for siding and roofing, since the panels are prone to prolonged periods of exposure to sunlight. This is especially evident in our UNITREX® panels.

Other polycarbonate features include:

  • Flexibility
  • Durability
  • Strength
  • Good temperature range
  • Chemical resistance
  • Water absorbent

polycarbonate panels greenhouseFor years, when people thought of a greenhouse, they pictured a building made of glass.

That isn’t always the case anymore.

Let’s take a look at some of the advantages of using polycarbonate to build your greenhouse:

It’s much more durable than glass

When you build a greenhouse using glass, you run the risk that it will crack, whether due to hail, an errant baseball from a neighborhood ballgame, or vandalism. Polycarbonate is much more durable, and able to withstand breakage and scratching.

It distributes heat more evenly

When you build with polycarbonate panels, you’re ensuring that light rays are spread evenly throughout the building. This helps plants grow faster, and at a uniform rate. And with polycarbonate, you may not need as much shading to protect your plants, as the material is often coated with a UV filter.

They are easier to assemble

Because UNITREX polycarbonate panels are flexible, you have a wider range of options when it comes to the shape of your greenhouse. This gives you more space to work with on your property. You can assemble one within a day, because the process isn’t as delicate as when you build a glass greenhouse.

Using polymers enables various builders, from the do-it-yourselfers to industrial contractors, to create lightweight construction such as skylights and non-load-bearing walls. While there are many benefits to polycarbonate building panels, it may help project managers to fully understand where these multi-wall panels make the most sense.  To do this requires an understanding of the many advantages of polycarbonate when compared to other materials, and to review some examples of where multi-wall polycarbonate panels are most commonly used.

Benefits of Polycarbonate Multi-Wall Panels

Compared to glass and other non-polymer materials, builders and engineers who incorporate polycarbonate panels find that they have numerous benefits.  For skylights and industrial settings, polycarbonate building panels are better at handling UV rays from sunlight and impact strikes such as hail, stones or any flying materials.  In addition, these multi-wall panels can also handle high-variance temperature shifts making them great all weather building panels with the added ability to protect various types of equipment from fire and smoke.

Polycarbonate building panels can be used as both curved and flat forms to accommodate interior wall designs with much more ease than other materials.  Similarly, shapes that would otherwise be impossible to form with other building materials can be formed into polycarbonate panels.  All this helps to creates less work for installers simply because these multi-wall panels can be installed without the use of adhesives, or the need to cover up installations thanks to snap covers and other elements.

Commercial Applications

Using polycarbonate multi-wall panels for business needs can offer a cost-effective alternative to dividing up rooms for employees or providing protection from a factory floor for the quality assurance personnel, for example.  Polycarbonate panels are often used to funnel traffic at stadiums and arenas since this form of sheeting provides a prime location for printing advertisements, logos and even providing directions for visitors.

Similar possibilities exist for businesses with large offices, allowing visitors to easily make their way from one department to the other.  Polycarbonate panels used for advertisements and signage can increase brand visibility for businesses from passing traffic, on the road or pedestrians, with the added benefit of a long lifespan due to the inherent protection from UV rays and heat that polycarbonate provides.

polycarbonate multi-wall panels

As mentioned, polycarbonate is a phenomenal all weather building panel that can also be used as an alternative for roofing and windows, especially in manufacturing facilities where temperature control is important to ensure no issues with the production processes. Protecting atriums and other smaller outdoor spaces is also possible using polycarbonate multi-wall panels at a lower cost than glass and at a lighter weight to help reduce the amount of structural support required.

Utilized as a roofing panel the polycarbonate still allows for natural light to shine in, but with additives can help businesses change the transparency of the roofing panel to either protect workers and visitors from UV light or to help create a desired ambience.  From the inside out, these multi-wall panels can help protect employees from flashing or other potentially harmful elements of manufacturing without completely blocking off the area.  With the use of strategic additives, polycarbonate multi-wall panels can provide enhanced corrosion resistance.  This is especially useful where a production or fabrication process includes, or produces, noxious chemicals causing occupational safety hazards.  In this case, polycarbonate building panels can help by adding another layer of protection for non-production staff working in the same building and allowing for multiple uses of a given property without high expenses.

DIY and Residential Applications for Polycarbonate Multi-Wall Panels

For many do-it-yourself enthusiasts, researching materials for projects consists of a quick scan of possibilities online, followed by a quick trip to the local big box home improvement store. Without realizing it, they may be setting themselves up with an unnecessarily high budget and a project that does not incorporate the best components for their given application.

Polycarbonate multi-wall panels, and roofing panels, can be used to make highly effective greenhouses of any size and are perfect for enclosing a swimming pool or hot tub to help extend use into the winter months.  Families can create conservatories or help protect sunrooms from the elements without having to pay for a costly off-the-shelf system.

polycarbonate greenhouse panelsPolycarbonate building panels are a great material option for people looking to turn a shed or other outdoor structure into an office or living space.  The interior would look much more inviting with a polycarbonate skylight, or two, helping to augment whatever artificial lighting system is in place.  It is also possible to extend walkways with canopies or build weather independent passageways between detached garages and carports by using polycarbonate panels.  All without worrying about the higher costs associated with multi-material construction.

H&F Manufacturing Is Here to Help

There are many opportunities to take advantage of polycarbonate multi-wall panels in any number of applications, including many that we have not touched on above.  If you have a project that you think might benefit from these panels, contact our experienced staff at 1-800-474-2732 or use the short submission form at the “Contact Us”.  Please include the details of your project, and the products you’re considering, so that we can contact you for a free consultation regarding the best components for your needs.

ULTRA-R ® Polycarbonate Panels roofingAs the calendar page flips from October to November, the trees transform from bright yellows and oranges to barren and grey. The days grow shorter, the nights longer, and the temperature plummets.

For anyone who lives in North America, these sure signs of winter means that it will be six months or more before the family can again enjoy the carefree fun of a waterpark. For anyone north of the most extreme southern parts of the United States, it is entirely too cold outside to zip down a waterslide or ride idly round and round on a lazy river.

Or is it?

No matter how cold it gets outside, temperatures are always in the 80s in an indoor water park.

The indoor water park, a concept that took the nation by storm beginning in 1994, has become a phenomenon that has transformed the way travelers think about their vacations. No longer are families required to take vacation only during the crowed summer months. Indoor water parks offer a low-cost alternative to expensive tropical vacations during the winter.

And now H & F Manufacturing Corporation, a leader in the manufacture of plastic siding, roofing, and louver panels since 1973, is a part of the waterpark legacy, as their ULTRA-R ® panels were used at one of the country’s premier waterparks ? South Padre Island located in Galveston, Texas.

The ULTRA-R ® panels were the ideal material for the waterpark application, offering virtually unbreakable strength, moisture and UV resistance, and fire retardancy. The lightweight polycarbonate panels were easy to install and provide long-term performance.

South Padre Island called on H&F Manufacturing for their 1/16″ thick ULTRA-R ® Panels, with clear polycarbonate panels on be used as siding, and soft white (85% LT) to be used as roofing panels. They also used 1/8″ thick flat clear polycarbonate sheets on some of the movable doors and windows of the waterpark.

H & F Manufacturing Corporation has a line of PHASE-2 ® PVC and UNITREX ® Polycarbonate Panels that are the ideal building materials for any application requiring durability, chemical and UV resistance, and a “new look” appearance.

Thanks to H & F Manufacturing Corporation, there’s no need to book a plane ticket when the kids get cabin fever this winter. Whether you crave surfing 35-mph waves, or just a relaxing ride in tube on a lazy river, H & F Manufacturing Corporation has the ideal building materials for any application requiring durability, chemical and UV resistance.
